IRONMAN LANGKAWI 2007

While on a friendly sms exchange with a regular weekend training buddy, I verbally committed myself to taking part in Ironman Langkawi 2007.

...... *gulp*

Finishing strong. Together.

Derek Redmond is not a name that conjures up memories of Olympic gold medals. In this video, you will discover the essence of the human spirit as you witness Redmond struggling his way to the finishing line of the 1992 Olympic 400m semi-final heats after tearing his right hamstring only 175m away from the finishing line.

But that's not all.

Redmond's dad, upon seeing his son in trouble, rushes down from the stands onto the track to assist him. Together, arm in arm, father and son, with 65,000 people cheering, clapping and crying, finish the race, just as they vowed they would.

Facing a painful situation in life? Feeling tired and overwhelmed with life's struggles? Don't think of giving up yet. Finish strong cos' I've got a pretty good feeling the BIG guy up there is with you all the way.

Maths Humour

I ripped this off my brother's blog who ripped it off his friend's blog. His friend happens to be my friend too, so I guessed I ripped it off my friend's blog after all. Can laugh until die.

Lean On Me (2)

Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow

Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you don't let show

If there is a load you have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
If you just call me

So just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'd understand
We all need somebody to lean on

Lean On Me

I remember a familiar tune way back in the 1980s that always brought some cheer to me whenever I was feeling out of sorts. "Lean On Me" was one of those songs you quickly learn to play on the piano because you don't have to change fingers. You simply place your fingers in one position and go up and down the keyboard. It was that simple.

As I sit back on a Sunday evening recollecting the events of the day, this tune happened to find it's way into my head - a spent and braindead one. So i Googled it (while humming to the tune) and found the lyrics to the song. Reading it led me to understand why today wouldn't have been just an ordinary one without a precious Friend who carried me through each hour, minute and second of the way.

My Sunday started off at an unearthly hour - 4 A.M.! I was apprehensive about the day because I was going to run the Shears Bridge 21km half-marathon, rush back to tidy up my message, prepare my scores for worship later in the afternoon, play the dong-dong-chiang at 1.30pm and finally deliver my message to a panel of judges. The situation at the start of the day wasn't bright and cheery with a badly strained lower back and a flu that stucked with me for 3 days.

But press on did I and I found myself at the starting point of the race on the Esplanade bridge. My watch read 5.30am. The horn blew and I began at a brisk pace. I was already prepared for the massive jam so I did my usual weaving in and out of the human traffic. My back acted up on me again but I gritted my teeth and ran the entire race in pain. Finding the momentum was difficult with my nose blocked and phlegm stuck in my dry throat. Having disciplined my mind over the years to finish each race regardless of the circumstances, I forged ahead and finished the run in a less than perfect time.

I only realised how much pounding and impact each stride had on my strained back when I tried doing some cooling-down stretches and winced in pain as I experienced a series of muscle spasms and felt a bolt of pain shoot through my deltoids to my lower back. I knew then that this wasn't looking good at all. I hurried home in a cab and immediatedly applied a special ointment and gobbled down some muscle relaxants and pain killers to ease the pain. I prayed that God would only sustain me for the rest of the day.

But God is faithful always. A strange sense of peace and tranquility filled my mind and spirit as I touched up my message, played for service and proceeded to preach the message of my life. The better news was that the pain subsided and was more bearable. While I can attribute that to my intake of muscle relaxants, I knew my God, Jehovah Rapha, was at work.

The verdict? I guess I did just enough to proceed on to the second round. The glory goes back to Him. He alone deserves all praise and honour.

Lean on Jesus, somebody?

The Real Deal

NEW BALANCE REAL RUN 2006

Yea, never bruff you. This one is REAL run. REAL one, not fake. Jin eh, bo pian le.

Two down, four more to go. This morning's 10km real run is the second in my schedule of races for the month of August. Despite the zero hours of training this week, the morning jam and the rush to the start line, I thought I faired average with a timing of sub 46 mins. Apart from the sand route which is now much shorter, everything esle was familiar. Except that it was different. A different feeling to meet with people familiar. People whom you begin to build deeper relationships through informal activities and sharing similar passions. It wasn't anything special to be given a lift to Sentosa with Winfred and his gf in tow. Nothing exceptionally wonderful to walk with him to the starting line, finish the race and chat excitedly about the challenging yet fun segments of the run.

I enjoy the simple pleasures of spending time with Winfred - my friend, my cell member. And getting to know Priscilla better in the process too! A sweet and wonderful girl who commits herself to supporting Winfred for every race he enters. It brings a warm feeling to your heart to engage in REAL talk, REAL fun, REAL relationships. That's exactly what Jesus did on the streets and in the marketplace. Building bridges and winning the lost has got to do with a fundamental principle - Relationships, relationships, relationships.

Let's get the REAL deal.

And so to Winfred & Priscilla, thank you for sharing your conversations, your laughter, your aspirations, your lives. These are precious to me. Life could not be more meaningful with simple occasions like these.

Ironman 70.3 Singapore!

*blink blink* I can't believe it.

It is HERE!!!!!!!! Ironman 70.3 has arrived in SINGAPORE!!! For those of you who are wondering what this is all about (no, it's not some ego-boosting bodybuilding contest), the Ironman 70.3 is a half-ironman consisting of a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21km run. It's a great start for the sport of triathlon in Singapore (of which I am extremely passionate about) and I do hope this grows into the full Ironman distance with qualifying spots for the World Championships in Hawaii! (like I can qualify..... Lord please grant me an entry through the lottery!)

Preach it, Brudder!

So I've registered myself for the Young Preachers' Contest without knowing what I've gotten myself into. My motivation? Well, I'm certainly not aspiring to be like famous evangelist preacher Reinhart Bonke (maybe I'll end up as Sebas Bonkus) or our very own leg-wobbling, arms flaring, show-stopping Ps Khong! I entered b'cos I really wanted to stand alongside and support my very own spiritual son, Stevie. He has a call to become an equipper and teacher of God's Word and I'm immensely proud that he is making his first BIG step towards reaching that goal. It doesn't matter if he wins or not (I'll try to preach something corny so that he stands out), he'll still be my pride and joy. Most great preachers didn't start out as great preachers anyway. What's significant to me is that he's seeing the opportunity and taking practical steps to achieving his dream. Well, to the rest of my guys, if you're reading this, let's DREAM BIG together. It's all together possible to make it happen.

Believe me*.

Dream with me, somebody?

09082006 - Celebration of A Nation

With a 350D camera in tow, I began my duty of "patrolling" the narrow isles and paths of the National Stadium. 34 NDP Motivators were under my care and after an exhausting 4-month journey, I was determined to enjoy myself on this big day. Nationalistic pride was in the air, the weather was great and the atmosphere charged up. Final preparations were done, soldiers were in their positions and everything around me were "All systems go!". I paused for a moment. I wasn't going to miss this beautiful sight as a nation prepares for her final birthday celebration at the National Stadium. Then with one hand on the trigger and the other supporting the lens, I began snapping away.

I hope you enjoy the following pictures..
